Boundless
École secondaire du Havre

As part of Quebec’s “1%” programme (Intégration d’œuvres d’art à l’espace public), my proposal Boundless, won the contract to create the work of art that covered three outer walls of the gymnasium at the École secondaire du Havre, in Terrebonne.
Concept
As my paintings are generally abstract, I wanted to create a work that would retain these qualities, but which would also be representative and capable of being understood by a young audience. To begin, I created a large brushstroke which I applied with a Rorschach approach and then folded over the original image to create an "open book", located at the corner of the South and East walls. From this book, numerous forms and objects emerge that blur the boundaries between abstraction and figuration, leaving room for interpretation.
With this project, I wanted something organic to play with hard architecture, in the same way I create my paintings. A "call and response”, where I do not consider any mark to be accidental, nor any misstep, because I believe that it is the subconscious that makes decisions to which the conscious must respond. Playful and pictorial, a rhythm runs through the work, like a story unfolding on the building.
